The 3 Main Massage Techniques Explained

Massage therapy is a popular form of relaxation and healing, and there are three main massage techniques that are used by all professionals. Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and sports massage are the most common types of massage offered at professional massage studios. Petrissage is a kneading, rolling, and twisting technique used to release muscle knots, while friction is used to loosen muscle knots. Tapotement involves the masseur gently and rhythmically touching the body with their fists, the side of their hands, or cupped hands.

Vibration involves the massage therapist using their fingertips or the heel of their hand to perform a back-and-forth motion on the skin. Effleurage is often used at the beginning and end of a massage to achieve maximum comfort and relaxation for the client. It is important to use effleurage before moving on to other techniques such as petrissage. Kneading, which is an easy technique for amateurs to do, involves using the thumbs or palms of the hands to apply pressure to various parts of the body.

Rubbing is another technique that requires the use of thumbs that usually move in a circular pattern, applying pressure as you go. This method is used to stimulate blood circulation within the body, as well as to treat muscle and joint pain. Sports massage is a form of massage that is applied for sports purposes. The main purpose of the massage techniques used here is to increase blood and lymph flow, while reducing pain and releasing the pressure trapped in the nerves.

Mastering and knowing all these techniques is the goal of a licensed professional massage therapist.
